Kate DiCamillo Author Study: This year we will read many of Kate DiCamillo's books for homework. Homework is assigned on a weekly basis to allow you family time and afterschool flexibility for activities. Please ensure your student is working on each of the chapter bundles and completing each of the assignments. We encourage you to read the weekly chapters with your scholar and complete the homework together- due every Monday. (Homework for Mrs, Krause)
Cinderella Unit: In literacy, we are working on determining characteristics of folktales and learning how to determine the central message of the story. Students will be learning to compare and contrast these texts through their writing. (Literacy Classwork)
Greek and Latin Root Word Vocabulary: Every other week, students will be working on new words of Greek and Latin origin. They will receive the list at the beginning of the week, and will be asked to study it throughout the week to prepare for a test every other Monday. In class, we will complete a variety of activities with the vocabulary words based on Dr. Kagan's Cooperative Strategies. Please study the root words with your scholar. This will help to not only build their vocabulary, but it's actually a helpful skill to decipher unknown words/contact clues. (Homework/Classwork for Mrs. Krause)
Civilization Projects: This assignment is ongoing classwork where students are working to create their own (slightly made-up) civilization. Throughout the year we will add to their projects by studying different social studies concepts. In the upcoming weeks, their civilizations will begin elections for their leaders. I encourage you to discuss at home how our country elects its leaders, so students have a frame of reference. in order to run their own elections As we get into more topics, I will update this section! (Classwork for Mrs. Krause)
Upcoming Projects
Genius Hour Projects: Google created this project to keep their employees motivated, and we have adapted it for students to use in our classrooms. Students will begin working on this project in the first few weeks of school, and will plan projects based on the ideas they generate. This is an ongoing project; once one is completed, students can begin to think about and design a new project of their choice. (Classwork for Mrs. Krause and Mrs. Wiley)
Toys through Time: This project is our third grade magnet project and will be conducted throughout the year at both home, and school. If you have questions about this project, your main contact is Mrs. Brodd our lead TD Catalyst Teacher. You can e-mail her at the following address: [email protected] (Homework/Classwork for Mrs. Brodd)
Social and Emotional Nurturing Unit: Throughout the next couple of weeks we will begin our Third Grade Social and Emotional Unit.
